INFOGRAPHIC - app revenue between 2010 - 2011
Well, the figures are not looking great for the "99p" app this year! It seems Distimo have reported that the glory days of generating a standalone game or utility are through with a push to the more developed and supported "freemium" or in-app purchase app model. Ad supported revenue seems to be on the up, however I fear with the European economy in the state its in now, this will not yield the kind of revenue we were used to hearing around in the past 2-3 years.
It seems we are leaving the glory days of the small bootstrapped, one man development teams, in favour of the more rounded business structure. Apps with well developed interactive UI's, iterative and feedback led update remits, and a cross platform HTML5 delivery - seem to be the way to develop in the next year.
I'm not disappointed with this, I too have tired of the "app craze" over the past 6 months, I did go through a faze of buying several apps per day, testing, playing, evaluating, and deleting at will. But, I don't think I have bought an app in weeks!
Couple this with the news regarding Adobe flash and mobile, and the proliferation of HTML5 web apps as blue chip alternatives to IOS, we are at the cusp of a change here, I think its - "get on board" or "get out" time!
