2013 - Tech Predictions

So, I love and hate these kind of posts, but find myself constantly referring and confirming or denying the "future".

Here are Read Write Web's 7 biggest predictions:

VRAY - 10th Anniversary film

This is a fantastically original little product demo video, showing some of the many much love features of Vray and Vray RT, in a really original and fun way. The video starts in the usual domain of; classroom/office backdrop with someone telling the camera why Vray is what it is, this soon decends into film still anarchy while everything around the dialogue and content remains focused on Vray and Vray attributes.

Favourite line - "Everything has Fresnel!"

PS, only bother if you are a Vray geek, it won't mean toffee otherwise!

WOW, this is a fantastic REALTIME experiment from Square ENIX studio and Luminous Studio in Japan, shown this year at E3 2012.

3D Studio Max - Sneek Peeks

Well, there have been a number of these snippet, little, cheeky videos released over the pass few months, all from different people and with an odd variety subjects and video quality - so, with a marketing man's head on I'm not sure what is going on. Are these attempts at viral intrigue, or releases fro people within Autodesk HQ, or what....

But...With a 3D Artists' head on, wow! I think, at least I hope that some or all of these little 'sneek peeks' make it into the final build version (either 2013 or 2014), because some of these are fantastic!

Destroying the Big Six - ecotricity

What a great way of poking fun at the big six British energy companies!

"The mood in Britain has turned very much against the Big Six energy companies. And it's not hard to see why. People are fed up with the unethical pricing, complex tariffs, awful customer service and the dire lack of investment in new sources of green energy."

ecotricity hope to change this opinion with this comedic short showing the destruction of old power stations, although well done and, actually quite funny! I think they endear the viewer to the old buildings too much!

TESTING p3d.in - 3d browser model import

Thought I would have a quick look at this, I have used PDF services in the past to send out model visuals to clients and allow for their sign off, but the service hopes to bring the process back to the browser.

The process is fairly simple, although it did time the browser out twice on upload, but I think this can be easily overcome. It would be nice to see a large progress upload section too when uploading. Once uploaded, there are a couple of format and shading functions available (wireframe, wire on shader, and a green see-through option), it would be nice to add material and dynamic lighting options to this too.

I would also like to see multiple object control and the ability to hotspot these areas, to allow the user to move directly into one section and rotate locally to that.

The Future of 3D studio Max 2012

I have been a long time supporter of Max, I have used in personal and industry projects for the best part of 8 years now, and yes, there are umpteen little niggles, tweaks, annoyances, and bugs that drive us crazy as patrons of this platform. Its nice to see that these are finally being addressed without compromising on the future development of the platform in the annual digital refreshment. UI love some of the little bits (you tend to forget them after a while) but, yea, when you think about it these are daft little quirks we work round every day!!!

Raspberry PI PC's go on eBay

I have been following the development of these for a while now, I love the idea of having a device the size of your hand that is a fully capable and functional system (mobile phones and tablets aside), these devices are designed to run the standard desktop OS's we are all familiar with and at a price that will dwarf that of any tablet or mobile device side by side.

I love the "ardunio - esq" functionality of the pieces as they stand at the moment, they have not even thought of the form these units should take, or the box they should come in.
